Optional Classes and Routines
This year, routines are optional and don’t correspond directly to a single track. You may choose to join the routine that matches your track level (Adv/Master: Owls/Badgers, Int+: Foxes/Hedgehogs, Int: Eagles) or use the free time for rest, other optional classes, or any of our camp activities
Themes/Tracks: These are series of classes on a related topic- except for the solo jazz routine, they are not cumulative and you can attend some of a series without attending all of it.
Balboa optionals-: In addition to our full track! Come get Balboa is known for it's fancy footwork, nuanced movement, and fast tempos. With the exception of the beginner class, all classes will be at an intermediate level and assume you know the basics.
Nia- Alcina: Join Alcina for a morning mind-body-spirit wellness program. Bring a yoga mat if desired.
Solo Jazz Routines- Laura or Tyedric: Our daily solo jazz classes will be progressive this year, combining into a routine to be performed at the end of camp. Classes will be taught at an intermediate (Laura) and advanced (Tyedric) level- expect to be challenged with solo jazz awesomeness.
Teacher Classes-Naomi and Peter: These two classes will help you assess your own skills as a dance teacher and help you find more effective ways to teach. There will be one class each geared towards beginner teachers and more experienced teachers.
Individual Classes:
African Rhythms- Chisomo & Jenn: Come get your rhythm training on; this class will share influences for your swing dancing from Southern Africa.
George Lloyd's Magic Footwork- Annabel & Bobby: We'll learn some amazing feet sorcery from this Savoy legend meant to impress, smooth, and leave people wondering how the trick was done.
Get in Line (Urban/Soul Line Dancing)- Dom, Kalz, Kheim: Add some moves to your repertoire as we enter the club and learn some classic urban line dances!
Having Fun on the Dance Floor- Alcina & Dan: A partnered dance is a shared experience that’s shaped by what you each bring. This class will help you develop awareness and techniques to connect and dance with any person.
Introduction to Whitey's Speed Lindy- Annabel & Bobby: Moves and techniques the Harlem pioneers developed to make fast dancing easier, flashier, and satisfying-er. We also promise we won't just do swing outs the whole time.
Jams & Steals- Annabel, Dan, & Michael: Worried about how to enter a jam? Never able to steal your friend on their birthday? These three will have you swapping and stealing in no time.
Movement Quality- Erin: This class uses improvisation tools from modern and postmodern pedagogy to expand the range and dynamics of what is possible in improv for jazz dancers.
St. Louis Shim Sham- Annabel: Come learn this fun and elegant routine originally choreographed by Jon Tigert.
The Temptations of Cool-Dom, Kalz, Kheim: Learn movement inspired by the greats of Motown, and how to use it to inspire your dancing (and your life).
